   The Team   

William & Mary’s men’s and women’s cross country and track & field teams have a long tradition of excellence at the College. This is due to both teams’ rich history of achieving extraordinary success in competition, academics, and service. 

Nationally, the W&M track & field program boasts

  • 3 world records,

  • 3 American indoor records,

  • 8 NCAA/AIAW/USAT&F National Champions, and

  • 107 NCAA All-American honors. 

 

Additionally, the men’s track & field teams have been crowned conference champions 35 times and the cross-country team has won an astounding 42 conference championships.  With their shorter history, the women have won the conference track & field meet 11 times and cross country championship 23 times.

In the years after graduation W&M track & field athletes have

  • been named to an Olympic team,

  • won 14 national championships,

  • competed on the US National team 54 times, and

  • qualified for the Olympic Trials 63 times.

 

Both the men’s and women’s teams take great pride in their academics.  The accolades speak for themselves.  The teams boast

  • 39 Phi Beta Kappa inductees,

  • 3 Rhodes Scholars,

  • 2 Fulbright Scholars,

  • 116 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Academic All-Americans,

  • 10 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans, and

  • the men’s and women’s teams were named USTFCCCA All-Academic teams 72 times.

 

The teams regularly participate in community service activities which strengthen the bonds between William & Mary and the Williamsburg Community.  Every year track & field hosts and raises funds for the Massey Cancer Center with their 5K race.  Through the years the teams have raised over $300,000 and the race has been recognized as the second longest-running fundraiser for the Massey Cancer Center.  The teams regularly participate in the SAAC Harvest Basket initiative by collecting food and hygiene products for local organizations.  Additionally, they help with One Child Center for Autism’s Kids’ Night giving children with autism an opportunity to meet college athletes and have an evening of fun.

 

After graduation, track & field/cross country alumni have gone on to be leaders in the fields of business, public service, education, medicine, law, and athletics among others.  In addition, these same alumni continue to give back to both William & Mary and their communities by volunteering their time and expertise.
